Each week we will be highlighting a few things about ADHD that you may find helpful. For this week I wanted to talk with you about the stigma of ADHD....
Children, Students, or Adults don't want to be singled out... think of it this way. Its harder for individuals with ADHD to stay focused on that test, or remember that they were supposed to do their part for a committee at school. As a business owner I find myself working harder to make a list at night...
If you have been diagnosed with ADHD.... it's ok to forget sometimes. Don't be so hard on yourself... when anxiety takes over, call a friend, or take a brief moment to stop what your doing, close your eyes and just be in the moment... then take a big breath, blow it out slowly, move your shoulders around a bit. Then Keep Going. Nothing or no one can stop you from reaching our goals or dreams.
If you are a friend to someone with ADHD, when they make mistakes don't laught at them, laugh with them and maybe share something you did that week that you were suprised that you forgot to do. Or help them organize their backpack.
If you are a parent, just love your kids. They face social situations that can sometimes hurt... however their home should be their safe place. They struggle, so let's change that for them. When they do something good, acknowledge what they did, and thank them for making an effort.
In summary, ADHD children, students, and professionals are extremely brilliant. When they find out what they are good at, they excel better than most individuals. Let's encourage them, you never know when they just might invent a cure for cancer, or help with reducing gas emissions, or create organizations that change the world.
